About Us

What is the purpose of the HVPI?

The purpose of the Hospice Veteran Partnership (HVP) is to improve end-of-life care for veterans, service men and women and their families. This is accomplished through education and advocacy for all hospices and other stakeholders interested in this cause. We believe your organization will be interested in: Increasing awareness and knowledge about veteran and service member end-of-life needs and options Strengthening relationships between hospice and healthcare organizations providing palliative care and/or home care, VA programs, and community organizations serving veterans, service members and their families Improving veterans and service members access to hospice and palliative care across all sites and levels of care

Why are the needs of veterans at end of life different from any one else?

As human beings, we share some common experiences as death approaches. However, veterans may have even more complex needs, especially combat soldiers and POWs who have faced the grim realities of death in a very dramatic way. Veterans may also be coping with unresolved grief or survivor guilt having witnessed traumatic deaths and injuries that may color how they come to terms with their own death.

Is the HVPI a new organization?

No, previously the state of Indiana had three separate hospice veteran partnerships. The Northern Indiana VAMC, Richard L. Roudebush VAMC and the Indiana Association of Home and Hospice Care. IN 2015 through collaboration and combined efforts the partnerships merged to form the HOSPICE AND VETERAN PARTNERSHIP OF INDIANA!

What are Hospice-Veteran Partnerships?

Hospice-Veteran Partnerships (HVP) are coalitions of Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) facilities, community hospices, State Hospice Organizations, and others working together to ensure that excellent care at the end of life is available for our nation’s Veterans and their families. These coalitions may be community-based or statewide and may function independently or within an existing structure. HVP is a national program of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Hospice and Palliative Care Initiative
